mathematics education;, original sources;, dangers secondary sourcesAbstract
This article discusses three ways in which going back to consult original sources could benefit the field of mathematics education. The first benefit is avoiding the dangers of relying too much on secondary sources, which include repetition of erroneous facts, oversimplification, misinterpretation, and nuances or issues that are lost in translation. The second benefit is gaining a sense of history of changes in the field and attribution of credit for ideas. The third benefit is the opportunity to learn from the masters, both from the present and from the past.
