Abstract

Telemedicine is the use of information and communication technologies to provide healthcare remotely. This narrative review was conducted to evaluate the use of telemedicine in the pediatric population with chronic diseases. A randomized clinical trial demonstrated that telemedicine reduced days of care outside the hospital by 24 %, serious disease complications by 32 %, and the annual cost per child by 15 % in pediatric patients. Its implementation has generated satisfaction among healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. The literature search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, HINARI, and SciELO, including original studies, review articles, and meta-analyses published between 2020 and 2025. The evidence shows that telemedicine contributes to continuous care, improves treatment adherence, reduces hospitalizations, and provides economic benefits. It also strengthens continuing medical education and fosters the creation of collaborative networks; however, obstacles remain, such as the high cost of technological equipment and limited internet access. Further research and the development of strategies are necessary to ensure equitable and effective access to pediatric telemedicine in resource-limited settings.
