Information about some birds that nest in El Salvador

Abstract

Information is presented about the nesting behavior of 18 bird species in El Salvador.  Most birds nest between the months of April and October, including Mangrove Rail (Rallus longirostris), Wood Stork (Mycteria americana), Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) and Limpkin (Aramus guarauna). There was not previously published information about the nesting of these species in the country. A review was conducted of the nesting sites of the Wilson’s Plover (Charadrius wilsonia beldingi), one of the most threatened migratory shorebird species in the hemisphere. Information is provided on the latest known nesting of the Great Egret (Ardea alba) in the country and on the first recorded nesting of the Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) in La Union Bay.
