Epidemiological surveillance of oral diseases in the population served in Health Units in the year 2021

One of the lines of study of the Research Center of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of El Salvador is the epidemiological surveillance of oral health conditions, with the national oral health survey in 2016-2017 being one of the first investigations. carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. Following this line, the study Epidemiological surveillance of oral diseases of the population served in Health Units in 2021 is presented, which presents the prevalence of oral diseases, some associated factors and treatment needs. After confinement and social distancing due to the COVID -19 pandemic, during 2021, an interview and clinical examination was carried out on 2,000 patients aged 5 to N years, treated in 20 health facilities distributed in different regions of El Salvador; The results will be the evidence to evaluate and enhance health plans or the adoption of new prevention and control measures. Likewise, this surveillance system includes the pregnant population. Of the total population studied, 74.85% (1497) were female, of which 35.74% were pregnant. 65.11% of men and 75.56% of women presented an optimal level of oral hygiene. The ceod/DMFT index and caries are increasing in relation to age; at 12 years of age the percentage of children with caries was 11.71%; in those aged 15 years 16.57% and in those aged 35 to 44 years 53.71%. Regarding the periodontal condition through the CPITN, between the ages of 35 and 44, 80.68% presented calculus without a periodontal pocket. Prosthetic rehabilitation in general is very low and no adolescent is rehabilitated, with 30.19% of rehabilitated patients being between the ages of 35 and 44.
