Abstract

Antibiotic residues in pasteurized milk have been report in region countries. The demand of fluid milk is supplier with local and imported products. Due to the above, our purpose is to explore antibiotic residues in ultra-pasteurized milk in the metropolitan area of Guatemala. Beta-lactam, tetracycline, and sulfonamide antibiotics were screening using the rapid colloidal gold immunochromatographic technique with the MilkSafe™ 3BTS test. A total of 258 liters of milk at room temperature, offered to the public in 78 supermarkets, were used in this study. The availability of the eight brands varied by site at the time of sampling, causing differences in the quantities of units purchased. All samples (100 %) resulted in the absence of the MilkSafe™ 3BTS test residues. The possible reasons for obtaining results below the maximum residue limits (MRL) and the implications of these findings in the surveillance system for veterinary residues in milk for human consumption are discussing.
