Abstract

This article examines the emergence, development, organization and characterization of graduate studies at the Universidad de El Salvador between 1977 and 2010. The study departs from a classification of graduate models and types; at the same time, it reviews the administrative and academic structuring process of this academic level. The argument in this article is that the implementation of graduate studies has occurred not only facing   institutional difficulties regarding its strategic planning, but it has also been developed out of a conception in which prevails the idea of being an alternative option of getting financial resources, instead of a decisive factor for academic institutional improvement.
