Abstract

The present paper tries to cover the sanitary history and the history of the health care strategies in place in the Mosquito Coast from the arrival of the Europeans until 1986 The segment here sunnitized and somehow updated has as purpose to sketch the conditions of Health of the native population in the northeastern part of Nicaragua (present RAAN) in a first historical period: From the first written sources that deal with the topic (of European origin) to the arrival of the Moravian missionaries, whose interaction with the inhabitants of the Coast in this plane will both; provide better information and affect the traditional ways of dealing with health problems (1492-1850). To characterize the health conditions of the population the following indicators were chosen: the life conditions of the indigenous communities (particularly with respect to the disponibility of food) and the prevalent diseases. Some of the characteristic traditional ways of dealing with problems related to health.
