Fish parasites in some Atlantic Coast rivers
Keywords:
Freshwater fishes, Ichthyology, Monogenea, ParasiteAbstract
The present study comprises a systematic record of monogenean species (Dactylogyridae, Ancyrocephalinae) collected from the gills of fishes of the families Pimelodidae, Poeciliidae, Cichlidae and Characidae, in some of the rivers of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua in 1999. Most of the monogenes found are morphologically similar to those previously described in southeastern Mexico. Some aspects of the geographic distribution of all the taxa found are briefly discussed. From a zoogeographic point of view, these findings support the idea that the migration of fishes through Central America to Mexico has occurred simultaneously with their monogenes.
