Right of communities to their consent on the exploitation of natural resources in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua

Abstract

This investigation analyzes indigenous peoples and ethnic communities rights to prior consultation with regard to natural resource extraction in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. This study focuses on the content of relevant treaties and conventions in domestic and international law. Based on this legal framework, the author analyzes how concessions to transnational corporations have violated the rights of indigenous peoples and ethnic communities in the Caribbean Coast region.
