The year 1914 is significant for the history of the black community in the Caribbean: Marcus Garvey, a humble Jamaican printer, founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.), a universal association for the advancement of the Negro. The association wanted to organize oppressed Negroes throughout America for the purpose of improving their material condition, and to develop pride in the Negro race. The U.N.I.A. was understood as a fraternal organization that also wanted to liberate Africa, that is, the Negro's own homeland, from Western imperialism.
