Abstract

This article documents and explains variation in women’s patterns of participation in agricultural activities in the southern basin of Pearl Lagoon. Interviews with thirty women from the communities of Haulover, Manhattan and Kakabila yield information about different farm activity profiles and factors influencing the variations, such as ethnicity, family tradition, socioeconomic structures, gender ideologies, alternative income opportunities, reproductive support, and women’s educational and health statuses. Also explored are women’s perceptions and attitudes about their participation in farm work. The research indicates that the women interviewed are not adequately served by agricultural extention efforts, despite recent efforts to include them in state and private development.
