Oil: the beginning of a great paradox. is it worth the risk?

Abstract

This article considers the benefits and drawbacks of granting transnational companies permission to carry out oil exploration in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. It also weighs the repercussions that oil exploration could have for the region. The article analyzes the following topics: potential for oil reserves in the autonomous regions, concessions given to transnational oil companies, finding of past explorations, the rights of the autonomous regions with regard to oil extraction, international experience with oil extraction, and the potential environmental, economic, and social impacts of oil extraction in the region.
