Parameters of feed consumption, feed conversion and mortality in laying hens implementing a semi-intensive system in Estelí, Nicaragua

Abstract

Laying hen farming plays a key role in food security and the rural economy, particularly in the production contexts of developing countries like Nicaragua. This study aimed to evaluate feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and mortality parameters in laying hens under a semi-intensive production system at the Monte Carmelo poultry farm in the municipality of Estelí. The research was conducted between weeks 16 and 37 of the birds' life, using a quantitative, descriptive, and analytical-observational approach. A stratified probability sampling method was used, consisting of 320 hens of the Dekalb White genetic line and 500 of the Isa Brown line. Data were obtained from the analysis of production records and direct observation of the management system. The results showed low mortality during the evaluation period, with no deaths recorded in the Dekalb White line and a cumulative mortality rate of 0.4% in the Isa Brown line. The average daily feed intake during the stable production phase was 106 g/bird/day for Dekalb White and 111 g/bird/day for Isa Brown, remaining within normal ranges for laying hens. Feed conversion ratio showed high values ​​at the beginning of laying and improved progressively, stabilizing from week 25 onward in both genetic lines, with greater stability in Dekalb White. It is concluded that the average daily feed intake showed significant differences between the genetic lines, being slightly higher in Isa Brown. Regarding feed conversion ratio, greater stability was observed in the Dekalb White line, indicating a more efficient utilization of feed for egg production.
