Health effects of two carbonated beverages on experimental mice

Introduction. At present, the consumption of carbonated beverages is very common in much of the world, and continues to increase every day. In El Salvador it is frequent in the population’s diet, despite the fact that some constituent components are responsible for affecting health in different ways. Objective. To evaluate the health effects of two carbonated drinks administered continuously for 10 weeks to experimental mice. Results. The results of the clinical checks showed alterations in some evaluated aspects such as dehydration, pilo-erection and diarrhea. Whereas in body weight there were significant differences between the control group and the experimental group. In the organ’s macroscopic evaluation, the groups treated with the carbonated drinks suffered from certain irregularities, both in their appearance and their color, although in weight there were no significant differences except for the right kidney of the group treated with the carbonated beverage 1. However, blood chemistry showed only difference in total cholesterol in the group treated with carbonated beverage 2. Conclusions. The appearance of the mice treated with the carbonated drinks showed notable damage to their health, mainly the damage caused to the appearance of the internal organs.
