University extension in Colombia, as in many Latin
American countries, has gone through various
moments and approaches, it has been reduced
to courses, diplomas and workshops, sometimes
paid extension has been privileged over social or
solidarity extension, but it has also been a reference
at other times and scenarios for countries that are just
beginning their processes, however, to understand
these dynamics it is necessary to start from a brief
historical recount around the university models in
Colombia and with it, review the regulations and
gradual growth of the substantive function.
In this way, the present text addresses at first the 7
great models of the Colombian university, passing
through the colonial type to the modern style, and with
it the text gives way to a second moment in which the
different milestones, events, and events are presented
chronologically and regulations that have led today to
conceive extension as that function of interaction and
integration with the communities that is possible to
carry out through 9 typologies or modalities.
Finally, the writing concludes with some challenges to
face as a country in favor of a hierarchization of the
function, a "redefinition" of it and the updating of
national regulations according to the current dynamics
of higher education institutions.
