Introduction. The informal economy has played an important role in developing countries. This study analyzed the characteristics of the informal economy in the periphery of the industrial parks located in the cities of San Pedro Sula and Choloma, Honduras. Methods. A quantitative approach with a descriptive scope and a non-experimental design was used. The sample consisted of 40 sellers and 150 buyers in these municipalities. The survey consisted of 26 items for sellers. Information was collected on general and business characteristics and their future perspectives. Additionally, a survey of 19 items was applied to consumers obtaining information about their general characteristics. Results. Of the total number of sellers interviewed (40), 55% (22) chose this type of business because it was more accessible, 37.5% (15) out of necessity given that there are few sources of jobs in the country, meanwhile 7.5% (3) of people chose this sector because they had their own business. Conclusion. Despite being an unquantifiable economic activity, the informal economy has benefited Hondurans to integrate into the labor market, sustain their expenses and meet consumer needs in different areas of the country.
