The Language School at UIDE implemented the use of artificial intelligence in its English classes due to the reduction of synchronous hours in the courses it offers. In this regard, the project compensates for those hours through personalized and automated oral skill practices, with the aim of ensuring quality education. The study examined whether an artificial intelligence tool could help improve students’ oral skills and fluency in English, as well as their confidence and motivation. To this end, a mixed-method approach was applied. In the quantitative component, a total sample of 1,972 students from the four campuses was analyzed, comparing the results of oral tests from periods before and after the project’s implementation. In the qualitative component, an anonymous survey was administered to a sample of 912 students and 47 teachers to measure participants’ levels of motivation and confidence. Both methods showed an increase in oral skills, as well as in motivation and confidence in English oral communication. Thus, the implementation of the project achieved its goal and demonstrated that an artificial intelligence tool can partially compensate for the reduction of synchronous class hours. During the project’s development, adjustments and improvements were made to the process to facilitate practice and the use of the application, making it more accessible and user-friendly for both teachers and students. Therefore, it is concluded that artificial intelligence is a useful tool to enhance oral communication in English within virtual education, and that its application can also be extended to face-to-face learning environments.
