Of the different indigenous languages of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, Miskito has undoubtedly been the most studied; this is due, naturally, to the fact that the Miskito-speaking population is the most numerous among the indigenous groups. There are about 70-75 thousand Miskitos in Nicaragua and about 20-25 thousand in Honduras (these are approximate figures, because reliable demographic data are not yet available). Since the beginning of the last decade, CIDCA has promoted research on the grammar of this language, in part by linking it to the implementation of bilingual education. In the 1980s, a grammar of Miskito (CIDCA, 1985) and an elementary dictionary of the language (CIDCA, 1986) were published, as well as several collections of traditional stories and magazine articles.
