The objective of this study is to analyze the interrelation between the
substantive functions of higher education: research, outreach, teaching,
and innovation; and their impact on improving the quality of education at
the Technical University of Babahoyo. The methodological approach of
this work is based on three main points. First, it analyzes the positions of
various authors regarding the substantive functions of higher education,
research, outreach, and teaching to meet the needs of the current world. This
exploratory and descriptive qualitative study is organized into three stages.
A literature review on substantive functions for quality in higher education,
the presentation of experience in scientific-academic work in a case study
developed in the Tourism Program at the Technical University of Babahoyo
(UTB) in the articulation of substantive functions, and the presentation of
practical application recommendations for improving the quality of higher
education. The results evidence the importance of the articulation of
substantive functions to achieve a quality higher education. Recommendations
are formulated to strengthen the articulation of substantive functions at
the UTB, with an emphasis on promoting innovation. Among the main
recommendations are to strengthen and motivate a culture of research and
innovation within the university community, establish mechanisms for the
articulation of substantive functions, and connect with the productive and
social sectors.
