The languages of the Coast, their study and documentation
Keywords:
Ethnic group, Language, Indigenous language, ResearchAbstract
Parallel to bilingual education and largely motivated by it, scientific research on the languages of the Caribbean Coast has been developing in Nicaragua. In this essay we will present a summary of the work promoted in this direction by CIDCA, an institution that has promoted research in various areas of this region of our country since 1981. We will present the work done in each language separately. In each section we will also offer demographic and linguistic data on each of the coastal ethnic groups. Naturally, before the period whose research work, we wish to review here, studies had already been carried out on the languages of the Coast, some of them of great quality, especially about Miskito. On the other hand, there was (in the case of this same language) occasional parallel research. We will also briefly mention these independent works for each language.
