This article presents the development and operation of
the University in the Countryside Program (UNICAM),
implemented by the National Autonomous University
of Nicaragua, through the Multidisciplinary Faculty
of Estelí, as well as its implication on rural youth, the
family and the community in the northern rural area of
Nicaragua. If we assess the social impact of the program
during these 10 years, we have to affirm that students
have been served in their own territory, coming from
20 communities in the departments of Estelí and
Nueva Segovia, avoiding displacement to the municipal
capital and facilitating access to Higher Education to
which they are entitled and which has been restored
through government policies. Therefore, this article
makes known the importance of the UNICAM Program,
whose objective is to support the strengthening of ural communities, through access to Higher Education,
which favors socioeconomic development and the
reduction of poverty in the rural sector.
